Immediate Intervention, Sewage Ministry of the Environment, Lagos State
Restructuring and decentralization of the department into 10 sewage zones. A Sewage Management Team which formulates policies and coordinates all activities in the zones has been constituted.
Procedure for enactment of Sewage management laws to provide legitimacy and legal backing for SSSS is on-going.
Revamping three of the existing Government owned sewage treatment plants towards financial sustainability. Modification and Rehabilitation of Abesan, Oke-Afa and Iponri Low Cost Housing Estates are underway to be completed by December,2009.
Facility Managers have also been commissioned to take over the routine operations and maintenance of the STPs after rehabilitation. Facilities for co-treatment of sewage and septage have been put in place. The STPs will be financial sustainable after the completion of the project; revenue is derivable from the residents and Haulers who would have access to the Facility.
The Central Sewage System at Alausa Secretariat which serves the Secretariat, Staff Quarters, Lagos House and Lagos State House of Assembly is undergoing renovation and upgrade to respond to increase in population at design time of almost 25 years by increasing its capacity and an additional package STP has consequently been added. There are plans to network adjoining estates and properties in the area.
Sewage data bank and waste control contamination points have been established along the coastlines in the state .All disposal points in the state are being equipped with pretreatment facilities to reduce the organic load of the sewage before getting into the water body, this is to reduce the risk of contamination of the receiving water body and eutrophication. This is to be concluded by December 2009.
Identification of appropriate disposal points for future development in the 20LGAs is continuous.
Exclusive preservation of wetlands in the state for location of sewage treatment facilities.
Monitoring and enforcing compliance.
Enlightenment and Public awareness towards community mobilization and participation. Statewide Sewage Summit is slated for December 2009,besides communications in print and electronic media.
Collaboration with other Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals on sewage matters (Ministry of Physical Planning, MOH, MOW etc
