However, as many control consultants have learned the hard way, creating and sticking to a timeline isn’t as easy as it sounds. Depending on the type of consulting engagement, many project elements – from individuals to technology to operational and market variables — may generate unexpected complications and delays, quickly throwing a project off-track.
To start, speak with your customer to define the major project milestones that have to be accomplished throughout the course of this job. Take advantage of these milestones as the building blocks of your project deadline. Then, think about the steps that must take place to get from point A to point B, C, D etc – and the logical sequence in which every step must be performed. Think about what task has to be achieved in order to start the following. If multiple tasks can be accomplished in the exact same period, chart them . Even in the event that you fall behind, a timeline provides you a handy and remarkable tool for maintaining your client informed of progress and the causes of any flaws. And an educated and informed customer is more likely to be a faithful customer.
